About the author
Bertha Harris was an American novelist and educator whose formally adventurous fiction helped widen the possibilities of lesbian writing in the 1970s. Her novels are attentive to voice, desire, performance, and the stories people inherit about themselves. Lover, first published by the feminist press Daughters, Inc., is her best-known work; the independent publishing world around it is part of the book’s history. University sources differ on whether Harris was born in 1936 or 1937; the record here preserves that uncertainty.
