About the author
Christa Winsloe was a German-Hungarian writer, playwright, and sculptor. Her boarding-school drama Gestern und heute became the basis for the influential film Mädchen in Uniform, while her later prose revisited the character Manuela and the emotional world behind the school story. Winsloe’s work offers a rare view of lesbian desire in Weimar-era writing and invites attention to the difference between the original play, its novel form, and the films it inspired.
