About the author
Roger Peyrefitte was a French novelist and diplomat whose fiction made forbidden or guarded forms of intimacy a public literary subject. Special Friendships, set in a boys’ boarding school, became the work most closely associated with him; its reception and screen adaptation carried its questions about youthful desire and institutional morality far beyond France. He also wrote historical novels, portraits, and travel books.
