Sara Gruen often places human relationships beside the lives of animals. Water for Elephants follows a young veterinary student into a traveling circus during the Depression; the spectacle comes with dependence, danger, and the difficulty of protecting another creature. Her horse-centered early novels and Ape House offer other ways into that recurring concern.
