Beth Blankenship is an instructor at the University of New Orleans, in the
departments of English and Women’s Studies. Her exposure to queer literature
began in 1977 with a depressing immersion in
The Well of Loneliness. The following year a sympathetic high school
teacher gave her a copy of
Rubyfruit Jungle, saying “I think you’ll like this,” and her depression
lifted. Thankfully, the bounty of queer lit is such that she is no longer
limited to that initial debate of literary pretension versus popular fiction,
of self-loathing inversion versus joyful perversion.
