Set in
colonial Maryland, the story explores the journey of two people who must
grow up before they can grow together. The adventure takes them from the
plantations near Elkridge Landing, to the high seas at the dawning of the
age of piracy, to the frontier town of Charles Town, South Carolina, and
then back to Joppa Town, Maryland for the circus atmosphere of early
colonial "court days."

treasonous correspondence entices a Moravian widow and her sons to move to
Annapolis. She becomes entranced with the refinements of English
civilization while he grows committed to the patriot cause.
