yacht in inhospitable waters. His adventures and the colorful characters he
meets on his journey make this book a marvelous tale of courage and
friendship.

Despite his memories of his wife, he becomes close to a young woman
struggling to accept the harsh realities of their situation. Then a Morse
code signal is picked up and the submarine must set sail through the bleak
ocean to search for signs of life.

darkest wilds of the Australian outback. This is the sun-baked setting for
Nevil Shute's novel of a romance that is tested by the differences between
two young people's home lives. Stanton Laird is sent from his small town in
America to work in a remote outpost in Western Australia. While out there he
befriends the unconventional Regan family and falls in love with the
daughter Mollie. However, when Mollie travels to America to visit him the
couple realize that their differences in background make their plans for a
future together hard to realize.

Stephen Morris and Pilotage

These two linked novels have flying as a shared theme. In Stephen Morris we see
the eponymous hero leaving Oxford University unable to marry his girl because of
a lack of prospects. He starts as a mechanic and a pilot at a friend’s aerodrome
business. In Pilotage, Peter Dennison is to start as a junior partner at a firm
in China. The woman he wishes to marry can’t accept his proposal if it means
going to live in Hong Kong. Dennison has to find a way to make money and marry.
