"With each new painting, I try to raise the viewer’s consciousness
by taking the seemingly mundane and transforming it into an
awe-inspiring and memorable one. Combining pop culture imagery with classical style of
painting, I create an entirely new scope of art." |
Originally from Shreveport, Louisiana,
Richard has been painting or teaching art full-time for fifteen years.
Currently he is creating paintings of his favorite
personal icons using only four colors: white, red, yellow, and
blue. His goal is to create a color image that appears to be a black and white
image, Only upon close examination of the painting will the eyes be able
to naturally separate the deep black areas to reveal the layers of
color. To help this process he starts with a tight line drawing of the figure
or subject
(to remove any question of subject matter) and then adds texture to the
canvas creating areas not totally covered by paint.
Another example of his older work meld the well-established image of
Michelangelo’s “sibyls and prophets” with the pop-icons from the classic
“Justice League of America” comic book series. On the ceiling of the
Sistine Chapel, the sibyls and prophets foretell the coming of a higher being.
Combining these concepts with the qualities of strength, courage, and freedom
that are imbued in the world of Superheroes, Richard gives mere mortals
something to think about. In addition to intellectual, visceral, and spiritual
levels, these paintings have an appeal to comic book fanatics, admirers of
Michelangelo, and collectors of Pop-art.
