Murder at the Universe (2007)
--
Nominated 2007
Lambda Literary Gay Men's Debut Fiction Awards
For thirty-six-year-old Trevor Lambert, life revolves around work. As
Director of Rooms at the luxurious and ultra-modern Universe Hotel in New
York, he radiates dignified professionalism and high-end hospitality. When
Trevor inadvertently escorts VIP guest Brenda Rathberger—the cantankerous
executive director of the Victims of Impaired Drivers conference—past the
dead body of the hotel's owner, Trevor's perfect world implodes. Police
believe a hotel executive may be responsible and their suggestion that
alcohol may have been involved encourages Brenda to use the controversy to
grandstand her cause. She joins forces with celebrated TV anchor Honica
Winters, who exposes the sordid details on national television.
With his dear coworkers under suspicion and his treasured guests turning
on him, it's all Trevor can do to protect everyone, particularly his sweet
and lovely duty manager, Nancy. In the resulting clash among pampered
guests, harried employees, and militant protesters, Trevor struggles to
find the killer and to preserve the dignity of the Universe.
Murder at Hotel Cinema (June 2008
release)
After the tragic death of girlfriend Nancy, Trevor Lambert
moves to Los Angeles to start a new life as manager of Hotel Cinema, the
hot new boutique hotel with the tagline “High Drama in Hollywood”. At the
star-studded opening party, guests are horrified when celebrity bad-girl
Chelsea Fricks leaps off the balcony of her penthouse suite. Already
struggling with the challenges of opening a hotel, Trevor finds himself at
the center of a real-life Hollywood murder mystery. Faced with prying
media, a belligerent owner who treats the hotel like a family employment
agency, and a detective more interested in star-gawking than in solving
the case, Trevor is forced to step out of his comfort zone and into the
spotlight. As he gets closer to discovering the killer, he revisits
Nancy’s mysterious death and learns lessons about love, work, fame, truth,
and coming to terms with one’s past.
