With Signs & Wonders: An International Anthology of Jewish
Fabulist Fiction
(2001)
Bringing together 24 contemporary writers from 19 different countries, this
anthology captures the exuberant storytelling tradition of the Jewish people
that has been shaped by centuries of legends, folklore, and mysticism. These
writers-from Central Asia, Iran, Morocco, Russia, Siberia, Israel, Latin
America, Europe, and the United States-show the diverse strains of the Jewish
fabulist imagination. Teeming with passion and humor and rooted in the
triumphant and tragic history of a people, these stories illustrate-regardless
of language and locale-the Jewish fascination with the mysteries of the
imagination and the endless possibilities of life.
The Limits of Pleasure (2002) -- Finalist for one of ForeWord
Magazine's Book of the Year Awards
Through two intertwining
chronologies, The Limits of Pleasure follows Dave Miller, a 40-year-old
gay Jewish man who was raised by his Orthodox grandmother. A year after her
death, Dave travels to Amsterdam, the home of Anne Frank, whom Grandma
revered; yet Dave, feeling undeserving to confront the suffering that Grandma
endured in the concentration camps, cannot bring himself to visit Anne Frank’s
house.

Here Comes the Messiah! (2000) by Dina Rubina;
translated from Russian by Daniel M. Jaffe
Here Comes the Messiah!
satirizes the multiple dimensions of Israel and characters struggling with the
absurdities of life on the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv. The novel is
filled with people claiming to be the Messiah, swindlers and the swindled,
Jewish and Christian pilgrims, homosexuals, journalists, Holocaust survivors,
Palestinian Arabs, children, and pets-a story told with as much humor as
pathos.
