Loving Sander (1996)
An American photography scholar working in Holland has befriended
the ten year old son of colleagues there. Over the next two years, Will is
increasingly caught up in tensions between Sander’s mother Marijke and her
estranged husband, Niek over his growing intimacy with Sander. And the boy
himself - loveable but difficult - is increasingly demanding.
As Sander’s twelfth birthday draws near, Will has to decided whether to
return to San Francisco and the security of an academic life, or remain in
Amsterdam, where he must face the risks of his friendship.
Marrying Tom (2001)
Tom is sixteen, a new arrival in a small American village of
Madalin. He is a Protestant and a rebel with a reputation. Danny is
thirteen and from a well established village family, a model Catholic boy
and a member of the choir and the swimming team. The two boys belong to
rival gangs but, for all their differences, are inevitably drawn together.
The fatal attraction of opposites is told in this touching story of
growing up gay in small-town America.
The Deaf-Mute Boy (2006) -- Nominated, 2006 Lambda Literary Award for Male Fiction
The Deaf-Mute Boy—equal parts travel story, love story,
and a resonant confrontation with the Muslim world—is the tale of a gay
American professor immersed in a North African society. Maurice Burke, an
archaeologist, is invited to speak at a conference in the bustling port
town of Sousse, Tunisia. At first disillusioned by its rampant tourism and
squalid commercialism, Maurice becomes intrigued by his surroundings after
meeting a local deaf-mute boy. While exploring a vibrant souk, Maurice
encounters a religious leader who guides him on a fateful introduction to
the boy’s family. As Maurice’s involvement with the deaf-mute boy
intensifies, he finds himself drawn into a maze of Tunisian politics,
culture, and religion.
