Smith started her literary livelihood with the co-founding of A Woman’s
Prerogative, a bookstore in the Detroit metro area. Wanting more than
just a life behind the cash register and explaining the ins and outs (so
to speak) of non-book items sold in the store, (“Practice, practice,
practice and don’t cinch the harness too tight”) Kelly moved into
publishing. With the idea of starting her own publishing company, she
worked for a year in one of the largest lesbian presses before starting
Bella Books. While at Bella,
Kelly produced over 35 books, including 9 that were nominated for Lambda
Literary Awards. She is currently one of the founders of
Bywater Books.
