Miss Lady Bird's Wildflowers: How a First Lady Changed America (2005)
by Kathi Appelt with Joy Fisher Hein, Illustrator
Bluebonnets and lady's slippers, larkspurs and blazing
stars, black-eyed Susans and Granny's nightcaps.
From a lonely childhood in the Piney Woods of East Texas to an exciting
life in the White House, Lady Bird Johnson loved these wildflowers with
all her heart. They were her companions in her youth, greeting her
everywhere as she explored wild forests, bayous, and hills. Later, as
First Lady, she sought to bring the beauty of wildflowers to America's
cities and highways. She wanted to make sure every child could enjoy the
splendor of wildflowers.
In this warm, engaging look at the life of a great First Lady, Kathi
Appelt tells the story behind Lady Bird Johnson's environmental vision.
Joy Fisher Hein's colorful wildflowers burst from every page, inviting us
to share in Lady Bird's love for natural beauty.

Wildflowers Across America (1994,
2001) by Carlton B. Lees and Lady Bird Johnson with Les Line, Photographer
Wildflowers Across America is both a tribute to one of
this country's loveliest natural resources and a strong plea for increasing
the use of native plants and wildflowers in America's future landscaping.
Once established, wildflowers take little maintenance and are an
ecologically sound and low-cost way to make roadsides, park areas,
golf-course roughs, or your own country garden grow and bloom. This book
argues that we should let nature be our guide and get ourselves in rhythm
with her teachings.
However, although we have built up centuries of knowledge about the best
ways to grow vegetables, fruit, and garden flowers, we seem to know next to
nothing about the propagation of wildflowers. To remedy this ignorance, Lady
Bird Johnson decided that the time had come to begin accumulating the same
kinds of broad data for natural flora that we have for the cultivated roses
and tulips in our own gardens. Accordingly, in 1982, she donated $125,000
and a few of the family's acres outside Austin, Texas, to the founding of a
National Wildflower Research Center, now known as the Lady Bird Johnson
Wildflower Center.
This book is a true collaborative effort between the country's preeminent
wildflower enthusiast and a prominent horticulturist who responds to her
countless questions about wildflowers. Why do some thrive in some places and
not in others? How do they propagate naturally? Are all of our well-loved
wildflowers native to this continent or have many been introduced from other
regions? In dealing with questions like these, Carlton Lees selected
relevant excerpts from the journals of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century
plant explorers who saw this land in its pristine beauty and recorded for
Old World scientists the botanical wonders of the New World. Lees also chose
to illustrate some of the most beautiful representations of America's unique
flora in botanical publications of this early period.
But one of the major treats of this volume is the abundance of beautiful
wildflowers shown in the wild and in their true, natural color. Not only are
carefully identified flower portraits scattered throughout this book, but an
unparalleled 105-page album featuring the best-loved and most spectacular of
America's wildflowers has been selected by Les Line from the work of the
nation's best nature photographers.

tirelessly for conservation and education, in particular. In her home state
of Texas, her adopted home of Washington, D.C., and across the nation, we
can see the affects of this work. It s visible from national parks in
California to the world-renowned wildflower center that bears her name in
Texas. A Biography of Lady Bird Johnson gives us a thoughtful look at the
life of this influential and graceful woman. Brief and informative, the book
