Profile created July 14, 2006

After extensive training in classical piano, Sylvi turned to painting.  Between 1976-1993 her art was shown in galleries in the U.S. and Europe. In 1989, she began her journey into ambient/industrial electronic music and in 1995, she started singing.  These elements soon combined in the development of soundtracks for dance, theatre and cinema. Sylvi has scored the songs and music for most of Antero Alli's films and theatre since 1989. In 1996, she designed and published "The Vertical Oracle" (a neo-Tarot deck) and starred in "Lily in Limbo", a 27-minute poetry film. Her music CDs include "Too Near the Ghosts", "Dream of the Blue Moth" and "Under a Shipwrecked Moon". Sylvi has been in the core group of ParaTheatrical ReSearch since 1996 and currently appears in Antero's feature film "The Greater Circulation", which she also co-produced.  She teaches women's group singing classes and private lessons.

Writings
  • The Vertical Oracle: a modern divination device (1996), designed and published with Antero Alli
Contemporary divination deck of 52 full-color cards by Sylvie Pickering accompanied by a book of provocative text by Antero Alli (author of "Angel Tech", "Astrologik", and others). While not a traditional tarot, The Vertical Oracle is designed to incite creative responses to everyday real life quandaries. The ageless archetypes - Magic, Death, Rebirth, Ritual, Chaos, Hope, Synchronicity - are given a 21st century context for inspiring more meaningful connections between our vertical spiritual sources and the horizontal realms of the out-there material world. Anter's text also includes astrological interpretations for each card. The Vertical Oracle book/card set comes packages in an attractive, durable hard case.

Songs and Music
  • Too Near the Ghosts" (2001)
Features eleven original songs, ranging from gothic ballads to dirges to arias -- a tapestry of haunted melodies and laments -- her vocals, rich with feeling and lyricism, float and soar through the atmospheres of her spare instrumentations. Also includes music from the soundtracks of the films "Roadkill", "Lily in Limbo" and "Tragos" by Antero Alli.

  • Dream of Blue Moth (2002)
"Dream of the Blue Moth" represents the harvest of twelve years (1990-2002) of Sylvi's collaborations with husband, filmmaker/playwright Antero Alli. Featuring seventeen tracks of songs and music from Antero's films "Hysteria", "Tragos", "Fairy" and "The Drivetime", as well as, his theatre productions, "Hungry Ghosts of Albion" and "Requiem For A Friend". Sylvi's compositions range from the dramatic ("Outside Woman") to the lyrical ("Liminal") and are arranged with elegant understatement to serve the beautifully haunting and aetherial vocals she is known for. Instrumentation includes accordian, ukeline, electric guitar, cello, trombone, drums, electronics and organ.
